Why I’m Unhauling My Nnedi Okorafor Books

In case you missed it author Nnedi Okorafor posted pictures of owls on Threads earlier today.

Something you may not know is that many Indigenous tribes see the owl as a dark omen.

Now, if you don’t interact with many Indigenous folks, you might not know that. That is perfectly understandable. Certainly, we can’t be expected to know everything about every culture.

An Indigenous person then left a comment and asked for a spoiler tag and was met with a dismissive and disrespectful response. Whether or not you think that’s too much of ask, there were a multiple ways to respond with respect.

Hoping to give the author the benefit of the doubt, I returned to make sure the anti- Indigenous comments from other threads users had been deleted. Not only had they NOT been deleted, Nnedi LIKED the anti-Indigenous comments. “Ignorance of superstition”

Truly disappointing.

Be careful who you pedestal.

Just to add since this is getting traction

Again, I would like to reiterate- I, personally (Indigenous people are not a monolith) did not have a problem with the original post, it was the blatant disrespect to Indigenous people show after and the liking of the anti- Indigenous comments that made me come to the decision to no longer read her books.
