I Don't Celebrate Thanksgiving and Don't Care For Land Acknowledgements

This morning I read about the push for the Washington Commanders to bring back the Redskins logo. People are urging president elect donald trump to change the team's name back when he returns to office (LOL!)

This country is built on and fueled on by racism. I don't celebrate Thankgiving because making the genocide of people a day of feasting and celebration is gross. People will say, "but that's not what it's about now! It's about turkey! And family! And giving thanks!" These people also likely do little to reflect on true history, and instead of taking any meaningful actions to support Native organizations and people offer hollow land acknowledgements that serve no one except themselves. I honestly don't care to hear land acknowledgements from anyone who isn't Indigenous if it doesn't come coupled with action.

I'm spending the weekend by the coast and in the redwoods. I'm not going to be searching for the best Black Friday sale to fill the capitalism machine. (Though I will be stopping by my favorite coastal bookshop to pick up Robin Wall Kimmerer's latest book: The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World.)

Here are a list of things that you can do today to offset the ick of genocide feasting:

  • Donate to an Indigenous Organization
  • Buy Indigenous Books from an Indigenous Bookstore (like Birchbark Books, Black Walnut Books, Paperbacks and Frybread) Don't just read fiction. Read non-fiction, too!
  • Learn about the Indigenous people whose land you are occupying and educate your family on the violent reality of the holiday
  • Support Native business, artist and creators
